WORLD EARTH DAY

latest Current AffairsInternational Mother Earth Day, which promotes harmony with nature and the earth, is celebrated every year on April 22 worldwide.

It reflects “the interdependence between human beings, other species and the planet in which we all live.” It reflects the term Mother earth.

The 2019 World Earth Day will focus mostly on the conservation of species on the verges of climate change, deforestation, pollution and illegal wildlife extinction. The main focus will be on wildlife conservation.

  1. The World Press Freunity Index 2019 was published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which reflects increasing anti-journalist antipathy. India has fallen to 140th from 138th in 2018, two points below the previous year, on the World Press Freedom Index in 2019. According to the Index, violence against journalists, including police force, Maoist attacks, criminal organizations and corrupt politicians, are one of the most striking features of the current state of freedom of the press in India, too. In 2018, at least 6 Indian journalists had been murdered in duty.

  1. UN South Sudan Mission (UNMISS) honored 150 Indian peacekeepers serving in Malakal, South Sudan, with Medals of Honor for their supremacy and sacrifices. Colonel Amit Gupta was awarded the medal for honour. The awards ceremony consisted of parades and performances by a piped band. In the High Nile region of South Sudan, Gupta is commanding a battalion of 850 soldiers. Indian peacekeepers led highly desireDesirable veterinary camps under his command and operated a Malakal veterinary hospital.

State-owned carrier, Air India has hired 150 cabin crew members from Jet Airways on Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft on international routes and plans, as a goodwill gesture for Jet Airways, to lease the 5 Boeing 777 Jet Airways grounded. In Jet Airways on 19 international routes by 28 April, Air India offered passengers special rates with confirmed return tickets for travel. Even SpiceJet announced it will lease six Boeing 737 aircraft and implement new daytime flights to encash void from the temporary Jet Airways connection between Mumbai and Delhi.

  2. Pilot Jerrie Cobb, NASA’s first female astronaut, recently passed away. Cobb was the first woman to pass astronaut testing in 1961. In all, 13 women passed the difficult physical tests and became known as Mercury 13. But NASA had already its astronauts Mercury 7, all jet test pilots and all military men. Despite the 1962 testimony by Cobb in front of a parliamentary panel, none of the 13 Mercury ever reached space.

TIME’s 100 Most Influential People 2019

100 Most influential people of TIME-2019 are the pioneers, artists, leaders, titans and icons of the year who are most influential in the world.

The chairman of the TIME Group, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Arundhati Katju and Mr Menaka Guruswamy are the Indians among the 100 most influential members of the world and they are leading the historic struggling for LGBTQ rights in India.

The List includes Hasan Minhaj, President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, iconic TigerWoods golfing player, and Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder. The list includes the American-Indian comedian and TV host.

Project Kannamma

The Kannamma project is an initiative of Madras North Rotary Club for providing students with free, biologically degradable bathrooms, which began in August 2018.

The toilet is provided by the Welfare Society of the Tribal Women of Irula (ITWWS). Women in ITWWS use Muruganantham machines to produce 1000 pads per day. Under the brand Aavaram the sanitary napkin is produced using natural commodities such as cotton and wood pulp and only Rs 22 has a pack of six.

The project also promotes the livelihood of the Irula Tribal Women. The group is able to support families of 12 tribal women if it sells 15,000 pads per month.

Guided Missile Destroyer ‘Imphal’

Indian Navy launched guided missile destroyer Imphal at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai.

Imphal is the third ship to be launched under a project in which ships are built to carry and operate two multiple role helicopters.

Enhanced stealth features have been achieved through the shaping of hull and use of radar transparent deck fittings which make the ships difficult to detect.

Over the years, Navy has become a builder from a buyer and was slated to excel in coming years

  • Google has partnered with MMTC-PAMP India to introduce buying and selling of gold through the app to make Google Pay more useful for Indian customers.
  • Through this partnership with India‟s only London
  • Bullion Market Association (LBMA)-accredited gold refinery, Google Pay users will be able to buy 99.99% 24-karat gold.
  • Google Pay users can now purchase gold for any value, which will be stored on behalf of user in secure vaults by MMTC-PAMP.
  • Users can buy and sell this gold any time at the latest price, refreshed every few minutes on Google Pay app.
  • Other mobile wallet providers such as Paytm, MobiKwik and PhonePe too provide facility of buying gold from their wallet apps.

Fined 20 Lakh Rupees

  • India’s Pandya and K.L. Cricketers For her sexist comments on the popular TV chats, Rahul had been fined 20 lakh rupees each by the BCCI Ombudsman Justice D.K. Jain.
  • Justice Jain wrote in the order published on the official website of the BCCI that no further action will be taken against Pandya and Rahul, who have already served a temporary suspension and have appealed unconditionally for their loose comments on women.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is North West Bengal National Park.

It is known primarily for its Indian rhinoceros population.

For the year 2009, the Ministry of Environment and Forests declared the park to be the best among the protected areas in India.
